Chicago's Rising Star: Jaxon Wiggins' Journey to the Big Leagues
The road to becoming a major league pitcher is filled with challenges, and Jaxon Wiggins is learning this firsthand. As the Chicago Cubs' top pitching prospect, Wiggins is making his mark in his first big-league camp, leaving a lasting impression on the team and fans alike.
A Challenging Debut
During his initial live batting practice at the Cubs' spring training in Mesa, Arizona, Wiggins faced a daunting task. He stepped onto the field against seasoned hitters Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong, a test of his four-pitch repertoire against major league talent. Despite the pressure, Wiggins' skills were on full display, causing the veteran lefties to swing awkwardly at his offerings.
In one memorable at-bat, Wiggins fell behind Busch but demonstrated remarkable resilience, working the count full before inducing a whiff on an offspeed pitch. This encounter showcased Wiggins' ability to adapt and compete at the highest level.
"Facing such experienced hitters is an invaluable learning opportunity," Wiggins shared with the Tribune. "It boosts your confidence, but you can't get caught up in it. I just focus on my game."
Building the Foundation
Wiggins, a 2023 second-round draft pick, dedicated his offseason to refining his craft at the Cubs' Arizona complex. He successfully added 10 pounds of lean muscle to his towering 6-foot-6 frame while sharpening his pitching arsenal. His changeup, a key weapon in his arsenal, has been further enhanced by a new slider grip introduced last season, giving it a bullet-like movement.
However, Wiggins recognizes the need to improve his control, as his walk rate has been a concern. In 2024, he averaged 4.1 walks per 9 innings in Low A and High A, a trend that continued in 2025 (4.2 BB/9) as he progressed through the minor league ranks. Despite this, Wiggins found encouragement in his 2025 performance, particularly his impressive 1.93 ERA in 10 starts with Double-A Knoxville, where he dominated with 52 strikeouts in 42 innings.
Overcoming Setbacks
Last summer, a shoulder injury sidelined Wiggins for a month, causing him to miss the prestigious Futures Game during MLB All-Star weekend. This setback, though disappointing, served as a learning experience for the young pitcher.
"Pitching in the Futures Game would've been amazing, but health comes first," Wiggins reflected. "I had to prioritize my recovery to ensure I'm ready for the challenges ahead."
The Path to Success
To improve his strike-throwing ability, Wiggins understands that repetition is key. After missing the 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery, he made a remarkable comeback, reaching Triple-A Iowa by the end of 2025. Cubs manager Craig Counsell believes Wiggins' success lies in his ability to consistently deliver professional-level performances, refining his skills with each outing.
The Cubs have a history of promoting prospects based on merit, and Wiggins has received the same message as last year's National League Rookie of the Year runner-up, Cade Horton. The Cubs' approach is clear: earn your spot through performance, and the team will take notice.
Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy expressed his confidence in Wiggins, telling the Tribune, "When players focus on their game and let their performance speak for itself, they gain freedom. Wiggins has shown consistent growth, and while we don't feel the need to rush him, we're eager to see him prove he belongs at the top level."
Wiggins remains grounded, focusing on the present rather than getting ahead of himself. With 36 minor league starts under his belt, he understands the importance of continued development.
"I set goals, but I don't rush the process," Wiggins stated. "Making it to the majors is about consistent performance, and that's what I strive for every day."
