The dengue crisis in Bangladesh has taken a devastating turn, with a recent surge in infections and deaths. A deadly outbreak, claiming lives at an alarming rate, has the nation on edge.
In the past 24 hours alone, six more lives have been lost to this mosquito-borne disease, pushing the 2025 death toll beyond 310. Local media reports indicate that the situation is rapidly worsening, with 1,195 new cases hospitalized during the same period.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has released figures showing a total of 78,543 dengue cases this year, with fatalities reported across Dhaka and Barishal Division.
Currently, hospitals in Dhaka are treating 1,150 patients, while other parts of Bangladesh have admitted 3,337 patients. The gender breakdown of this year's patients is 62.3% male and 37.7% female, with a similar ratio among the fatalities.
But here's where it gets controversial: Despite the rising number of cases, the death rate is lower compared to last year, according to DGHS Director General Abu Jafor. He attributes this to the importance of early diagnosis and proper medical care.
"Our data shows that over 50% of dengue deaths in hospitals occur on the first day of admission. This highlights the need for prompt medical attention," he stated.
Abu Jafor emphasized the role of individual responsibility in preventing dengue, urging people to use mosquito nets and take protective measures. He also stressed the importance of breeding control and destroying mosquito larvae.
