A remarkable milestone was achieved on the ice at the Milan Cortina Games, where Hilary Knight, the most decorated woman in USA Hockey history, tied the US Olympic goal record in a dominant 5-0 victory over Finland.
Despite her impressive career, every goal still holds a special significance for Knight. On this particular night, with US Vice President JD Vance and his family in attendance, Knight's 14th goal tied her with Natalie Darwitz and Katie King, two legendary players in their own right.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, the circumstances are certainly unique. Finland, Knight's opponents, were far from full strength. They had been battling a stomach virus, with four players developing symptoms of norovirus just days before the match. Their roster was depleted, and the game against Canada had to be postponed.
And yet, the Finns showed incredible resilience. They returned to the ice as a full team for the first time in days, and put up a brave fight against the tournament favorites.
The Americans, however, were simply too strong. They dominated possession and created numerous chances, with Knight's goal in the second period being the highlight. She spun and fired a shot that deflected off the goalie's blocker, a moment of pure elation for the veteran player.
Knight's achievement is a testament to her skill and dedication. As defender Megan Keller said, "She deserves all the success in the world, especially who she is off the ice."
In other Group A action, Canada faced Switzerland, who had their own stomach flu scare. Meanwhile, Group B saw Sweden defeat Italy 6-1, with Thea Johansson scoring twice. Germany also secured a win, defeating Japan 5-2.
