The UAE Team Emirates manager, Joxean Matxin, has revealed the final piece of the puzzle for their Giro d'Italia lineup: Jhonatan Narváez, the Ecuadorian national champion. Narváez's recovery from a crash-induced injury is the key to the team's success in the prestigious race.
Narváez's Form Impressive
Narváez, the defending champion at the Tour Down Under, showcased his exceptional form in the southern hemisphere. He joined teammate Jay Vine in a race-winning attack during stage 2, demonstrating his prowess. However, the team's dominance was soon disrupted by a series of crashes.
Crashes and Injuries
During stage 4, Narváez crashed and suffered compression fractures in his vertebrae. The team's other riders, Vegard Stake Laengen and Mikkel Bjerg, also crashed out of the race. The race-winning Vine ended up with a broken wrist after a collision with a kangaroo. Despite these setbacks, Narváez's recovery is a beacon of hope for the team.
Matxin's Optimism
Matxin expressed optimism about Narváez's potential participation in the Giro d'Italia, stating, 'I think, within the limits of my optimism, he should be able to make the start.' This statement comes after Narváez's absence from key races like Milano-Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders, where he was set to support Tadej Pogacar.

In December, CyclingUpToDate predicted the UAE Team Emirates lineup, including João Almeida, Adam Yates, Jay Vine, Igor Arrieta, Florian Vermeersch, Jan Christen, and António Morgado. Matxin initially kept the schedule confidential, but Narváez's inclusion is now confirmed, making him the eighth rider.
Recovery Timeline
Narváez's return to the peloton is expected to take at least two months. Matxin emphasized the challenge, stating, 'It was, and still is, a terrible situation in terms of the outlook. Jhonatan can’t take part in the cobbled Classics, and that was the plan.' The focus is now on his Giro d'Italia participation, with the possibility of him also competing in the Ardennes Classics.
