John Candy's Legacy Lives On: Kids, Ryan Reynolds, and Colin Hanks Team Up for a Heartfelt Doc (2025)

More than three decades after the world lost a comedy legend, John Candy’s children are ensuring his legacy lives on—and they’ve enlisted some big names to help. But here’s where it gets emotional: Chris Candy and Jennifer Candy-Sullivan, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks, have crafted a documentary that’s as heartfelt as it is revealing. John Candy: I Like Me isn’t just a tribute to the late comedian’s iconic career; it’s a deeply personal journey into the life of a man whose laughter still echoes today. And this is the part most people miss—it’s also a chance for his kids to share a side of their dad the world never knew.

The film, produced by Reynolds’ Maximum Effort in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and directed by Hanks, traces Candy’s rise from his breakout role on SCTV to his status as a beloved film icon. But it goes further, offering an intimate portrait of the man behind the humor. For Chris and Jennifer, who co-executive produced the doc, this project is more than a career retrospective—it’s a labor of love.

‘It’s been incredible,’ Chris, now 41, shared with The Post. ‘Ryan’s a huge fan of our dad’s work, and his creative vision really brought Colin on board. That’s what made this all come together.’ But here’s where it gets controversial: What started as a viral social media tribute to Candy’s films snowballed into something much bigger. ‘Ryan found this video a year before we even began,’ Chris explained. ‘That’s what sparked it all. And Colin, with his documentary expertise, was the perfect fit.’

Jennifer, 45, echoed her brother’s sentiments, praising Hanks’s ability to bring the project to life. ‘Colin worked his magic,’ she said. ‘Knowing he was on board made us feel like the documentary was in good hands. It was an honor to collaborate with both him and Ryan.’

During a Q&A tied to the film’s October 10 release on Prime Video, Reynolds and Hanks opened up about their motivations. ‘John’s work shaped so much of my own perspective,’ Reynolds, 48, admitted. ‘I’m a super fan. His passing in ‘94 was the first time I truly felt the loss of a larger-than-life figure.’ Hanks, whose father is Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, added, ‘We wanted to create something that felt deeply personal to John’s life off-camera.’ And this is the part that sparks debate: ‘He left us at just 43—it’s staggering,’ Hanks noted. ‘But his films still evoke such joy. I hope people realize those feelings are still there when you watch his work today.’

The documentary features an impressive lineup of stars who knew and loved Candy, from comedy legends like Billy Murray, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Catherine O’Hara, and Eugene Levy, to newer admirers like Macaulay Culkin, Reynolds, and Hanks. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, the film highlights how Candy’s friendships endured, with his old pals still staying in touch with his family decades later.

‘They’re always in our orbit,’ Chris said. ‘Macaulay [Culkin] is a newer connection—Jen was on his podcast recently. But we run into Marty [Short] or Eugene [Levy], and they’re definitely part of our lives.’ Jennifer added, ‘We might not see them every day, but when we do, it’s like no time has passed. Even after years, we’re still super close.’

Here’s the thought-provoking question: In an age where celebrity legacies often fade, how does John Candy’s humor continue to resonate? And what does it say about the power of laughter to bridge generations? John Candy: I Like Me is now streaming on Prime Video, inviting audiences to laugh, reflect, and maybe even shed a tear for a comedy giant gone too soon. What’s your take? Does Candy’s work still hold up, or is it a product of its time? Let’s discuss in the comments!
