A blanket of fog is rolling into Latvia — and it's thicker than most people expect. Meteorologists are warning residents, especially in the eastern regions, to brace for visibility so low that driving or traveling could become genuinely risky. But here's where it gets interesting: the warnings differ sharply depending on where you live.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, a new weather alert has been issued for Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. While much of the western and central parts of the country fall under a yellow alert — signaling potential danger — the entire eastern side, including the Latgale region and parts of northeastern Vidzeme, is facing a more serious orange alert, which indicates an active danger level.
Throughout Latvia, visibility is expected to drop somewhere between 500 and 1,000 meters. However, in the eastern districts, conditions could worsen significantly overnight, reducing visibility to as low as 200 to 500 meters in some areas by early Wednesday. The warning is currently valid until 07:00, though meteorologists admit that predicting exactly when fog will lift is far from an exact science — nature likes to keep some mystery in the air.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant. Motorists should slow down, switch on fog lights, and pay extra attention to other vehicles, particularly before dawn when conditions are often most dangerous. Even though much of the recently formed surface ice has melted thanks to slightly warmer temperatures, there are still patches of slippery ground, particularly in shaded forested sections and smaller rural roads.
