Our journey begins with a recent auction, where a special Mk5 Golf GTI, transformed into a track car, found a new owner. This GTI, almost capable of keeping up with the mighty Mk8 R, left a mark on its custodian, who had big plans for it. However, the strict budget constraints meant that some upgrades remained just dreams.
One of the most crucial upgrades missed was a limited-slip differential (LSD). Without it, the GTI struggled with traction, especially coming out of tight turns. This issue, combined with the desire for a more aggressive look and a comfortable interior, led us to imagine a different path.
Enter the Renaultsport Megane R26, a car that takes track readiness to a whole new level. While we might not have gone as extreme with the aesthetics, this Megane's modifications are impressive. Under the hood, a Quaife LSD, an uprated clutch, flywheel, and driveshafts ensure an exceptional driving experience. The Brembo brake conversion and Nitron dampers with remote reservoirs further enhance its track capabilities.
But it's the engine that truly steals the show. The standard 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has been forged to produce an impressive 307hp, and with further tuning, it can reach a staggering 380hp. A custom four-inch stainless steel exhaust by K-Tec Racing completes the package, ensuring an exhilarating sound without breaking track day noise limits.
Step inside, and you'll find a surprising level of comfort and familiarity. Despite the full roll cage, bucket seats, and harnesses, the Megane retains its carpeted interior and much of its original dash. The steering wheel and gear stick have been upgraded for a more race-focused feel, but the overall layout remains user-friendly.
According to the ad, this project has seen an investment of around £40,000, far exceeding the budget of our GTI build. The seller is asking £22,990, which is significantly more than a regular R26 but far less than an R26.R. With the latter becoming an appreciating classic, this Megane offers a unique opportunity for those seeking a powerful, track-focused car without breaking the bank.
