Breaking News: Robert Jenrick Jumps Ship to Reform UK!
This isn't just another political move; it's a statement. Robert Jenrick, freshly ousted from the Conservative shadow cabinet, has defected to Nigel Farage's Reform UK. He's not holding back, calling his former party 'rotten' and urging others to follow suit.
Jenrick, who once vied for the Tory leadership, didn't mince words. He declared the Conservative party in Westminster as unrepentant, unchanged, and incapable of change. He added that the divisions and delusions are still there, even in opposition.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Jenrick's defection came swiftly after he was suspended from the Conservative party. Kemi Badenoch, the one who sacked him, claimed to have 'irrefutable evidence' of his planned defection. This move seemed to catch both Jenrick and Farage off guard, with Farage calling it the 'latest Christmas present I've ever had.'
During a press conference, Jenrick launched a scathing attack on his former party, stating that both Labour and the Conservatives have failed Britain. He revealed discussions with Reform started in September, facilitated by a former Tory advisor. Jenrick clarified that these were not just defection talks, but discussions about the state of the country. He also mentioned that he is proud to join and work with people who have built this party from nothing.
Jenrick's criticism extended to his former colleagues. He singled out Mel Stride and Priti Patel, accusing them of overseeing the explosion of the welfare bill and the surge in legal migration, respectively.
And this is the part most people miss...
Jenrick admitted he hadn't planned to leave the Tories on that day, but the decision was made. Farage, on the other hand, indicated that there would be no more Tory defections after the upcoming local elections. He also mentioned that they would reject more seeking to join.
Farage also stated that they would allocate jobs and responsibilities to key people in the coming weeks. Jenrick is understood to have discussed Reform’s economic policies with Farage, but any appointment as the party’s economic spokesperson would put him on a collision course with the MP Richard Tice.
Jenrick denied any interest in leading Reform UK, stating his personal ambitions are set aside. Badenoch had been monitoring Jenrick's activities, suspecting he was undermining the party. A draft resignation speech was discovered, with parts released by the Conservative party.
Badenoch, speaking ahead of May's Holyrood elections, dismissed the defection as a 'very bad day'. She suggested that defections to Reform are evidence of people entering politics for the wrong reasons. She concluded by stating that Jenrick is now Nigel Farage's problem.
