In a recent interview, Wayne Rooney, the legendary English striker, sang praises of his former assistant, Liam Rosenior, declaring him as good as any coach he's ever worked with. And here's where it gets controversial... Rooney believes Rosenior deserves a shot at managing Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in English football.
Rosenior, currently the boss at Strasbourg, is the leading candidate to take over at Chelsea, which shares the same owners as the French club. He arrived in London on Sunday night to discuss the possibility of replacing Enzo Maresca, with negotiations already at an advanced stage.
But why is this such a big deal? Well, Rosenior has an impressive coaching pedigree. He was Rooney's right-hand man at Derby County in 2021 and 2022, and when Rooney departed, Rosenior stepped up as the interim manager. He then went on to manage Hull City, narrowly missing out on the Championship playoffs, before moving to Strasbourg in 2024.
"He's taken chances, and hopefully that pays off," Rooney said on his BBC podcast. "His attention to detail, his approach to the daily grind, he's as good as I've ever worked with."
And this is the part most people miss... Rosenior's journey as a player might not have been the most glamorous, but it's his experience in the lower leagues and his coaching prowess that sets him apart. He spent half his career in the EFL and started his coaching career there, working with Derby for three years before Rooney's arrival.
"He's also got a side to him that you don't want to cross," Rooney added. "If he goes in there, he won't disappoint. He's been waiting for an opportunity like this, and I think he's ready."
But here's the kicker... Rosenior's last experience in the Premier League was as a player for Brighton in 2017. So, the question arises: Can he make the leap from a relatively unknown manager to managing one of the biggest clubs in England?
